Itineraries

Day 1

Downtown Monuments & Memorials (The National Mall West)

Morning: Arrive, check into accommodations, and head straight to the National Mall.

Afternoon: Explore the western end:

  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • World War II Memorial

Evening: Walk the Tidal Basin to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which are beautifully lit at night.

Day 2

Capitol Hill & GovernmQent Core

Morning: U.S. Capitol Building (Guided Tour - Book in advance!) and the Library of Congress (Stunning architecture and history).

Afternoon: National Archives Museum (See the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights).

Late Afternoon: Walk past the Supreme Court and White House (View from Lafayette Square).

Evening: Dinner in the nearby Penn Quarter neighborhood.

Day 3

Smithsonian Museums I (History & Culture)

All Day: Dive into the Smithsonian Institution museums. Focus on:

  • National Museum of American History (The Star-Spangled Banner, First Ladies' gowns).
  • National Museum of Natural History (Dinosaurs, Hope Diamond).

Alternative: National Museum of African American History and Culture (Requires booking well in advance!).

Day 4

Smithsonian Museums II (Air, Space & Art)

Morning: National Air and Space Museum (A must-see, check location for exhibits that have moved due to renovations).

Afternoon: National Gallery of Art (East Building for modern art, West Building for European/American masterpieces).

Day 5

Historic Georgetown & Waterfront

Morning: Travel to Georgetown, DC's oldest neighborhood. Explore the historic architecture, including the C&O Canal and Georgetown University.

Afternoon: Shopping and dining along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

Evening: Stroll along the Georgetown Waterfront Park for views of the Potomac River and have dinner at a waterfront restaurant.

Day 6

Military History & Reflection

All Day: Arlington National Cemetery

  • Witness the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
  • Visit the grave sites of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.
  • Tour Arlington House (The Robert E. Lee Memorial).
  • Consider using the interpretive tram tour to cover the large grounds

Day 7

Presidential Estate or Departure

Option 1: Mount Vernon Day Trip:

  • Travel to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate (About 30-45 minutes drive or take the Metro/bus/boat tour).
  • Tour the Mansion, gardens, outbuildings, and the burial site of the first president.
  • Combine with a stop in charming Old Town Alexandria on the way back for a final meal.

Option 2: Museum/Site Wrap-up: Revisit a favorite museum or explore a new site like the International Spy Museum (Paid entry) or the National Portrait Gallery.

Late Afternoon: Departure.
